There’s a Charlie Bucket in all of us waiting to unwrap the Golden Ticket! Remember Charlie? That lovable, sweet boy in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (book and movie) who won a grand tour of the candy factory (and then some)?
Well, Original Murdick’s Fudge is wrapping up that special Golden Ticket once again, this time as part of our fun-loving Mackinac Island Fudge Festival, which runs Aug. 19-21.
- On Saturday, Aug. 20, the “Daddy I Want the Golden Ticket and I Want It Now!” Giveaway will get underway while fudge-making demonstrations throughout the weekend take center stage.
- At 1 p.m. that day, Original Murdick’s Fudge will set aside 40 random boxes of fudge and hide a Golden Ticket inside those boxes. A Golden Ticket recipient then is entered into a drawing to win a Mackinac Island vacation.
But the fun doesn’t stop there. You’ll want to tip a cold one at the Michigan Made Craft Beer Tasting, which will feature our original chocolate fudge.
That’s right, make your way to the Chippewa Hotel’s Pink Pony bar on Main Street (named by Thrillist.com as the state’s “Most Iconic Bar”) to sample delicious Mackinac Island Fudge Stout.
Yep, Original Murdick’s Fudge is one ingredient in this unique beverage crafted by the Arbor Brewing Co. The roasty, chocolaty craft brew will be available alongside dozens of other Michigan-made beers from 3-5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19 and Saturday, Aug. 20 during the special Festival Beer Tasting event.
The fudge-lovers weekend rolls out a ferry-full of other activities as well, including the Great Turtle Slow Ride on Sunday, Aug. 21, at Windermere Point overlooking the Straits of Mackinac where Great Lakes Michigan and Huron merge.
Bikers will test their balance by trying to finish last in this slow race event. Bicycles are provided.
Can you carry a 50-pound bag of sugar while moving fast? The Pioneer Sugar Sack Relay Race runs Sunday, Aug. 21, also at Windermere Point.
Teams of four will compete at carrying 50-pound bags of sugar during this crazy sugar race. There will be different weights for different ages.
Fudge Festival Special
For those who are unable to visit Mackinac Island during this fudge-lovers extravaganza weekend, Original Murdick’s Fudge is offering a Fudge Fest free-shipping special Aug. 19-26 with any online fudge order placed that week.
Here’s a little background on our fudge-making traditions to get you ready for the Mackinac Island Fudge Festival.
Each batch of Original Murdick’s Fudge starts in a copper kettle and is painstakingly created with attention to indoor, outdoor and marble countertop temperatures, and length of time/temperature required for cooking, boiling, stirring, cooling and shaping.
The art of fudge making at Original Murdick’s also requires skilled artisans to perform a specific and timely turn-of-the-wrist “paddling” technique when shaping the delectable fudge into loaves.
Original Murdick’s Fudge is made with only the freshest, all-natural ingredients, most from Michigan, including sugar, butter, cream and maple sugar. No artificial ingredients are ever used in Original Murdick’s Fudge recipes.
Blend a tried-and-true recipe with handcrafted, precise techniques — along with a temperate Great Lakes climate — and you get pure excellence in a 129-year-old Mackinac Island classic fudge.
